Scientific Analysis


Driving or Talking? The brain concentrates on one thing at a time.

1- In one sentence, what was the research about? – If you are focused in on using your sight, research shows that it is harder for us to hear.

2- How many subjects were used in the experiment? – 32 students

3- Was there a control group? – Yes, Jerker Ronnberg (a professor of psychology at Linkoping University) and his colleagues.

 4- How were the subjects chosen? – they randomly chose 32 students from Linkoping University.

 5- What did the experimenters do to the subjects? – They gave the subjects a visual test while some were in a calm area and others were in a distracting area.

 6- How did the subjects react? – The subjects in the distracting room found it very difficult to hear because they were so focused in on the exam.

7- Did the subjects act the way the experimenters expected? - Yes

 Study links selfies, happiness.

1- In one sentence, what was the research about? – According to studies, snapping selfies on your smartphone will make you a happier person.

2- How many subjects were used in the experiment? – 41 students (28 female & 13 male)

3- Was there a control group? – Yu Chen and her colleagues

 4- How were the subjects chosen? – they randomly selected 41 students from a college.

 5- What did the experimenters do to the subjects? – They had to document their moods during their first week of study. They had to do this 3 times a day. They also had to take 3 pictures a day. 1. – a selfie while smiling.    2. An image that would make you happy.    3.  – an image that you think would make another person happy.

 6- How did the subjects react? – The selfie group became more confident and happy with their selfies over the 3 week study. From number 2, people became more appreciative, and from picture 3, their friends and family relieved more stress.

7- Did the subjects act the way the experimenters expected? – I think the experimenters were a little surprised.

How Beardedness affects women’s attraction to men.

1- In one sentence, what was the research about? – Research shows that women are more attracted to men with a beard than men without a beard.

2- How many subjects were used in the experiment? – no number, just random women.

3- Was there a control group? – there was a group of investigators.

 4- How were the subjects chosen? – they randomly selected women.

 5- What did the experimenters do to the subjects? – the experimenters used graphing computers and put a guy on the screen with different types of beards. The beards they chose from were clean-shaven, light stubble, heavy stubble, and a full beard. They used more men just so they could have more examples and more accurate readings. They took a survey to see what pictures of each person was most attractive.

 6- How did the subjects react? – the subjects found out that men with beards were way more attractive. If you had a beard with stubble in it, you were the most attractive of the groups.


7- Did the subjects act the way the experimenters expected? – yes

 More evidence that TV ads may influence Kid’s drinking

1- In one sentence, what was the research about? – according to studies, if young children watch TV ads about the use of alcohol, those kids have a better chance of drinking when they get older.

2- How many subjects were used in the experiment? – 1,031 thirteen to twenty year olds.

3- Was there a control group? – yes, Timothy Naimi, M.D., M.P.H.

 4- How were the subjects chosen? – they were 13-20 year olds randomly selected from across the nation

 5- What did the experimenters do to the subjects? – they were given 20 TV shows that had commercials with alcoholic brands in them and asked if they had seen any of them before. They reported on the ones that they have drank before and seen.

 6- How did the subjects react? – underage drinkers who had not seen any drinking ads had about 14 drinks a month. That rose to about 33 a month by the time that they had seen 300 drinking ads. Drinking levels shot up after they had seen drinking ads.

7- Did the subjects act the way the experimenters expected? - yes
